SOS – School of Sustainability Students win the first prize in a competition for a green office building in Changzhou, China

“Promoting Green Building at the Age of Quality": this is the purpose of the 1st International Sustainable Building Design Competition promoted by China Building Materials Academy. In China the development of green and sustainable buildings is reaching a higher level of connectivity with the living environment, improving the degree of empathic relationship between man and nature in the modernization and digital age. According to the 13th Energy Five-Year Plan of China, the country has planned to stop increasing carbon dioxide emission by 2030, and plans to increase the average of non-fossil energy in primary energy consumption to about 20%. "Economy, applicability and beauty” should be the drivers to achieve near-zero carbon emission buildings. To do this the choice of renewable energy, new materials and new technologies should be the way to artistically create a green architectural product in accordance with the features of the climatic zone. Moreover, the influence of the cultural legacy ought to be taken into account to discover further possibilities of inheriting and developing traditional Chinese architectural culture and grafting them to contemporary lifestyle.

The proposal made by the students of the 5th SOS School of Sustainability program aims at achieving the highest possible degree of balance between advanced working space and a nature driven, human-centered, energy efficient, modern building.
