CONCEPT DESIGN
CITY MEETS NATURE
Helsinky
2014 - university project
The project was designed as result of a Project Unit at Politecnico di Torino.
During the design both architectural and structural features are taken into account. First steel dimensioning was driven at the same time with design decision to understand structural possibilities.

The unit project deals with architectural forms and structures, including also the dimensioning. In projects’ design, the architectural concept has to consider the project structure since the beginning, in order to verify the stability of structures and understand the consequences of different architectural forms.

In the project, the concept proceeds by the relationship between nature and architecture, studying how they can be mixed and how they can coexist. In Finland, this idea is very important because of the natural conformation of soils, where lakes and forests interchange with cities, and because of people lifestyle too.

Analysing in details, the design includes also the square in front of the building where the city, from the south, and the nature, from the north meet each others near the building’s entrance. Nature and architecture are represented also by the building’s coverages: the northern facade, representing nature, are made by glass permitting to be the inner trees visible from the outside, while the southern facade is cladded by metal sheet. Different facades are designed also because of the building’s functions: in the northern part of the building, in fact, the restaurant and the bar need the maximum quantity of natural light, while for the library in the southern part, the natural light proceeded by roof is preferred, in accordance with Alvar Aalto researches about indoor lighting.
